Meditation Cushions: How We Make Them

Halfmoon - Meditation Cushions: How We Make Them

All Meditation Zafus made by Halfmoon have three key features: buckwheat hull filling, a carry handle, and a zipper.

We're going to take a moment to talk about why these features are so important.

Buckwheat Hull Filling

All Zafu Cushions made at Halfmoon are filled with buckwheat hulls. Buckwheat hulls are an awesome filling for zafu cushions for many reasons:

    • It's very eco-friendly. Buckwheat hulls are all-natural and produced without pesticides.
    • It promotes airflow, keeping you comfortable even during marathon meditation sessions.
    • It conforms to your body, holding space with no uncomfortable pressure points.
    • It is extremely resilient. Buckwheat doesn't compress like other zafu fillings, so you can count on the same comfort time after time.

Carry Handle

We know you're going to love your meditation cushion and want to take it everywhere.

That's why we make all meditation cushions with carry handles. Whether you're traveling from room to room, to your studio, or across the world, it's much easier with a carry handle.

Zipper

The zipper in all of our zafu cushions is important for two main reasons: adjusting the support of your zafu and washing the cover.

We've pre-filled our zafus to a level that most people find very comfortable. That said, sometimes your zafu will feel even better with a little more or a little less filling. If that's the case, just open the zipper and add or remove buckwheat hulls. Easy!

As for washing, a zipper allows you to empty all the buckwheat hulls out of your zafu cushion so that you can throw the cover in the wash. Check out any of our zafu cushion product pages for more specific care instructions.

Massage Therapy is an easy and feel good modality that helps treat soft tissue trauma in our body. This can be as microscopic as an adhesion in our skeletal muscle tissue that is causing pain, referral pain or a headache, and as obvious as a muscle stuck in contracture that causes what we refer to as a knot that seems to roll under your touch. We put our bodies through a lot, and physical stress like working out or even the physical stress from our jobs (whether it’s sitting all day or moving), as well as mental and emotional stress, can store itself in our bodies as tension.
